Place des Vosges

Situated just a short walk from major shopping, the river Seine, and other touristy areas, sits a pleasant little square with a history. The Place des Vosges, in the Marais district of Paris, is a charming little spot to sit and talk or even lay in the grass. I first went there with a friend to have coffee and catch up. Then went back to do a little more exploring and discovered lots of fun galleries and cafes in the surrounding square.

It turns out, the place is the oldest planned square in Paris, built by Henry IV. The name and things in it changed over the centuries, but I like how it looks now. My favorite part was the sand pit. I really wanted to just sit by it all day and see if anyone would walk into it.

Another discovery was the Victor Hugo museum. Turns out he lived there. I think I went to the museum years ago on a trip here, but didn't remember the square from that trip.

Another cool thing we noticed, after passing by countless art galleries and feeling very cultured, was the classy music being played on the sidewalk. A violinist and a cellist! They were pretty good too, and really made you feel fancy.

Another odd coincidence we found out later, there was a small fire in one of the buildings just hours after we left the square. Or at least a lot of smoke.

  1. The arches with the walkway look familiar, but was I at a different place, because I don't remember the park. Oh, my! another fire--looks like the one we saw when we came up out of the metro near Sacre Coeur--a lot of smoke.
