Parties all the time

The last few weeks have been busy with parties every weekend in Paris or out at La Queue with Paul's family. His mom's birthday was a couple weeks ago and we all gathered to make her a cake and open some presents. The kids helped blow out the candles. Then Van turned 4 years old the next week and we repeated it all over again. We gave him a frisbee and a water gun and he also loved new playmobile cars. This last weekend we celebrated the 4th of July with my friends from work in front of the Eiffel Tower. We had a picnic where everyone brought some food and we wore red, white and blue while listening to some American music. We didn't stay long enough to light up the sparklers since Julia had to get to bed. The summer is just beginning though, and we have Bastille Day here in France next week!

The Perfect Croissant

After reading an article in Le Figaro about where to find the best croissants in France, we decided to test these claims and go for a tasting. I mean, this is France, where they have the best croissants in the world, so this claim to number one will hold the title of "best croissants in the universe". Now, croissants are a big deal here. They're in every single boulangerie, although, I don't know how many parisians actually get one every day. It seems to be sort of a treat for the weekends maybe. So number one-Pierre Herme'. (he has an accent, but my american keyboard doesn't do those). Anyway, he's French, but got his start in Japan of all places. Luckily, he has two shops here in Paris and we found one near the St. Germain des Pres area. Very fancy. It's a tiny shop full of friendly people and lots of yummy goodness. Baking Attempts

I would never call myself a cook or a chef, but I think I can handle myself in the kitchen. I can follow a recipe. I can put a meal together. I'll probably never be a great cook, but I like to bake and relax by trying new recipes. Or sometimes just stick to favorite standbys like chocolate chip cookies. After moving to a foreign country, it became apparent early on that there would be some challenges. First of all, finding ingredients. Sugar, flour, eggs, butter and vanilla are common and can be found in most every grocery store. Not so for baking soda, shortening, chocolate chips and brown sugar. I splurged for some baking soda at the english shop that will last me a while. They also had a little container of Crisco shortening, but at 6euro, it wasn't quite worth it. Luckily we had some "Trex" brought over from England. I've brought over chocolate chips or been sent some, but they don't last long, so I've tried chopping up dark chocolate bars whic
